Estimate plaster and drywall from a measured layout

Turn a site sketch into reviewable quantities without hiding thickness, product consumption or cutting allowance.

THE FIRST THING TO KNOW

Separate measured area, physical build-up, product data, allowance and whole-package rounding so each assumption can be checked.

1. Record the real finish boundary

Sketch each wall or ceiling face, split irregular shapes and identify openings. Keep different board types, plaster systems and thickness zones on separate lines.

Small openings may not reduce board count because the surrounding face can still consume a full sheet. Deduct them only after considering the cutting layout.

2. Check substrate and average thickness

Plaster demand is controlled by average applied thickness. Survey high and low points instead of assuming that the nominal coat applies everywhere.

Confirm primer, bonding layer, reinforcement, corner beads and maximum single-coat thickness from the current system instructions.

3. Lay out boards before applying allowance

Choose sheet orientation around framing, joint staggering, fire layers and ceiling lifting constraints. A simple area division cannot prove that every offcut is reusable.

Use a modest, stated allowance for a simple layout and revise it for short returns, many corners, angled cuts or restricted sheet sizes.

4. Round once and verify delivery

Apply allowance to the calculated requirement, then round to whole bags or boards. Keep the small surplus visible rather than silently inflating measured area.

Verify storage, lifting route, batch, board condition and return policy before delivery. Protect powder and boards from moisture and distortion.

Worked example

Plaster for 60 m²

Average thickness is 10 mm, consumption is 1 kg/m²/mm and allowance is 10%.

Base mix = 60 × 10 × 1 = 600 kg
Order mass = 600 × 1.10 = 660 kg
25 kg bags = round up(660 / 25) = 27

Obtain 27 bags, then check primer, reinforcement and allowable coat thickness separately.

Common mistakes

  • Using nominal plaster thickness on an uneven wall.
  • Treating every board offcut as reusable.
  • Mixing single and double board layers in one area.
  • Rounding packages before allowance is applied.
