Wells & water/ CALCULATOR

Water volume in a round tank

Estimate the water held in a vertical cylindrical tank from its internal dimensions.

Measure inside the tank where possible.
Use the vertical water depth, not total tank height.
Water volume

2.12 m³

Water volume

2,121 L

A vertical cylinder with straight sides and a flat bottom. Domed ends, internal obstructions, wall thickness and unusable bottom volume are excluded.

FROM ESTIMATE TO ACTION

Use the result, not just the number.

01

Measure diameter and water depth

Use the internal diameter in metres, not the radius or outside width. Measure water depth from the flat internal bottom, not tank height or the gap above the water. Use documentation or safe external measurements; do not enter the tank to measure it.

02

Separate volume from usable storage

The result is geometric water volume, not automatically pump-accessible storage. For this flat-bottomed vertical cylinder, subtract the unavailable bottom depth from the current water depth and recalculate the usable layer. If water is at or below that minimum level, no usable layer remains.

03

Check shape and measurement precision

Use a manufacturer level-volume table for horizontal, tapered or rounded-bottom tanks. A +10% diameter error gives +21% volume at the same depth. Cubic metres and litres are rounded independently; extra displayed digits do not improve measurement accuracy.

Inputs to verify
