Construction/ CALCULATOR

Observed paint coverage from a one-coat trial

Subtract documented unused paint from issued volume, then calculate m²/L and mL/m² for one coat. No order, film thickness, thinning or quality approval is produced.

Actual coated area in m², excluding unpainted openings. Do not multiply by the number of coats; record each coat separately.
Litres of the same ready-to-use, undiluted paint allocated to this trial, on a documented volume basis. Not nominal can capacity or kilograms.
Documented unconsumed, reusable paint on the SAME basis, including unused portions wherever held. Keep it under the product instructions; do not pour it back into the original can just to complete the record.
Paint consumed on the recorded basis

0.600 L

Observed area per consumed litre

8.000 m²/L

Observed consumption per coated area

125.00 mL/m²

One product, one coat, positive area and issued litres, and 0 ≤ unused litres < issued litres. Same undiluted volume basis throughout. Consumed stock can include recorded application/handling losses, not just deposited film. No density conversion, dilution, uncertainty estimate, film acceptance, extra allowance or purchase quantity. Fictional defaults are not a product recommendation.

FROM ESTIMATE TO ACTION

Use the result, not just the number.

01

Define a comparable one-coat trial

Record product and batch, colour, substrate, preparation, application method, area, date and coat number. Follow the current label, product data and safety sheet for use, ventilation and protection; this record is not an instruction to spray, sand old coatings or modify a paint system. Use a safe accessible representative area and record one coat at a time. Separate primer, different substrates and changed methods. A tiny patch can be dominated by paint retained in an applicator and may not scale to a room.

02

Reconcile the stock, not the can size

Use documented litres issued and unconsumed paint left on the same basis; nominal package capacity is not a reading of remaining volume. Count reusable leftovers consistently wherever held. Consumed = issued − unused includes any losses within that accounting boundary, which must be recorded. Do not assume 1 kg = 1 L or add water/solvent to make volumes easier to read. If safe, reliable volume accounting is unavailable, keep the product guidance instead of inventing a trial result. Use dedicated compatible equipment only; no food vessels or transfers contrary to the product instructions.

03

Keep quality and ordering decisions separate

Hempel distinguishes theoretical from practical consumption and notes effects of surface conditions and physical losses. This is context, not a universal loss factor. A higher number is not automatically better: do not stretch paint thinner to improve it. Verify the specified film, appearance, coats and drying separately. The existing quantity calculator expects declared coverage and an explicit allowance; do not silently replace it with loss-inclusive trial coverage and add the same loss again. No automatic transfer or order is made here.

Inputs to verify

Area receiving this one coat A (m²)
Actual coated area in m², excluding unpainted openings. Do not multiply by the number of coats; record each coat separately.
Paint issued to the trial I (L)
Litres of the same ready-to-use, undiluted paint allocated to this trial, on a documented volume basis. Not nominal can capacity or kilograms.
Unused paint remaining U (L)
Documented unconsumed, reusable paint on the SAME basis, including unused portions wherever held. Keep it under the product instructions; do not pour it back into the original can just to complete the record.
