Tank age alone cannot show how much solids storage remains. Comparable measurements and the outlet-clearance criteria used locally provide a better maintenance signal.
1. Treat every tank opening as a serious hazard
Never enter a septic tank. Toxic gases, oxygen deficiency, unstable covers and falls can kill without warning. Keep children, pets, flames and untrained people away from an open access point.
Use a qualified service provider where required or whenever safe access, measurement or cover handling is uncertain. The calculator does not replace confined-space procedures.
2. Record the layers in a repeatable way
Measure normal liquid depth, bottom sludge depth and floating scum thickness using an accepted method from outside the tank. Record the date, tank compartment, liquid level and recent unusual water use.
Use the same measurement points and method next time. A single reading shows current condition; two or more comparable readings reveal the growth trend.
3. Use the service criteria that apply locally
Maintenance criteria may consider sludge depth, scum thickness, combined solids, clear space near the outlet or a mandatory inspection interval. Do not assume that one percentage is universal.
Ask the authority or service provider which measurement triggers service for the tank and outlet arrangement. Enter a combined threshold only when that interpretation is appropriate.
4. Estimate timing from observed growth
Subtract two comparable combined-layer readings and divide by the time between them. Changes in occupancy, garbage-disposal use, water use, temperature and tank condition can alter the rate.
Keep a planning margin and inspect sooner when the record is short or access is seasonal. If the criterion is already reached, arrange the required response instead of projecting another interval.
5. Look beyond routine accumulation
An abnormal liquid level, damaged baffle, carryover near the outlet, frequent backups, odour or wet ground needs diagnosis. Pumping alone may temporarily hide a hydraulic or dispersal problem.
After service, record the work, observed condition, repairs and a new baseline. Protect the drainfield by limiting unsuitable solids, grease and hydraulic surges according to local guidance.

Worked example
Turn two measurements into a planning date
Normal liquid depth is 120 cm. Combined sludge and scum increased from 18 cm to 26 cm in one year. The applicable combined threshold is entered as 33%.
Threshold = 120 × 0.33 = 39.6 cm Remaining = 39.6 − 26 = 13.6 cm Observed growth = 26 − 18 = 8 cm/year Time = 13.6 / 8 × 12 = 20.4 months With 3 months margin: plan within about 17 months
The date is a planning screen based on the observed rate. The actual service decision still follows separate layer, clearance and local inspection criteria.
